EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in rugby history, featuring John Devereux of the British Lions during an intense match against the Rest of the World XV at Cardiff Arms Park. The date was April 16,1986, marking the International Rugby Football Board (IRFB) Centenary celebration. In this particular scene, Devereux skillfully maneuvers with the ball while being supported by Brendan Mullin. The game itself held great importance as it served as a warm-up for the highly anticipated 1986 British Lions tour to South Africa. However, due to mounting controversy surrounding the apartheid government in that country, the tour was ultimately canceled. This unfortunate turn of events only adds to the historical significance and poignancy of this photograph. Notably, this match was just one part of a two-game celebratory series. Three days later at Twickenham Stadium, another thrilling encounter took place between a Five Nations side and an Overseas Union side - both matches aimed to commemorate IRFB's centenary milestone. Preserved through Colorsport Images and captured by talented photographer Colin Elsey, this print serves as a visual testament to not only exceptional rugby skills but also highlights how sports can intersect with social issues on a global scale.
