Keino won the heat and went on to win the silver medal in the final. Ryun, a favourite for the gold, was clipped at 1, 000m by Ghanas Billy Fordjour, and both fell to the track. Ryun got up a few seconds later but was hopelessly behind and did not qualify for the semi-final. As he crossed the line, Keino met him and tried to console him. The US Olympic Committee appealed, claiming Ryun was tripped, but was rejected by the IOC and he was out of the competition

In this particular heat, Keino emerged victorious while Ryun was considered a favorite for the gold medal. However, tragedy struck as they approached the 1,000-meter mark when Ghana's Billy Fordjour accidentally clipped Ryun causing both runners to tumble onto the track. Although Ryun managed to get up shortly after, he found himself hopelessly behind and failed to qualify for the semi-final. As Ryun crossed the finish line with disappointment etched on his face, it was Keino who met him with compassion and attempted to console his fallen competitor.
