EDITORS COMMENTS
The Last Man (w/c on paper) by John Martin captures a hauntingly apocalyptic scene, depicting the last survivor of a dying earth. Standing on a cliff-top, he raises his arms to heaven in a desperate plea for salvation. Surrounding him and stretching into the distance are the lifeless bodies of countless individuals, symbolizing the demise of humanity. This evocative artwork is inspired by lines from Thomas Campbell's poem, which describes the sun's sickly glare and an aging earth. The painting conveys a sense of desolation and despair as it explores themes of death, hell, and the afterlife. The red sun adds to the ominous atmosphere, hinting at impending doom. John Martin's skillful use of watercolors combined with varnishing techniques intensifies the impact of colors in this piece. The barren landscape reflects both physical and spiritual wilderness while emphasizing man's solitary existence in this post-apocalyptic world. Displayed at Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, this print serves as a powerful reminder of our mortality and prompts contemplation about humanity's fate. It invites viewers to reflect on their own place within an uncertain future while contemplating themes such as faith, judgment, and redemption. Bridgeman Images offers us access to this artwork that continues to captivate audiences with its striking imagery.
