EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the ancient Statue of Gudea, a mesmerizing piece of art dating back to approximately 2090 BC. Crafted from diorite, this Neo-Sumerian masterpiece stands at an impressive height of 44 centimeters and is housed in the prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The statue originates from Mesopotamia, specifically believed to be from the city-state of Lagash, modern-day Tello in Iraq. During Gudea's reign (circa 2150-2125 BC), Lagash flourished as a center for artistic expression and religious devotion. The ruler commissioned numerous statues depicting himself and composed Sumerian hymns and prayers that have survived through time. What sets this particular statue apart is the inscription on Gudea's robe, which lists the temples he constructed or restored in Lagash. It also bears his name - "Gudea, the man who built the temple; may his life be long". This inscription provides invaluable historical insight into Gudea's accomplishments as well as his aspirations for longevity. As we gaze upon this seated figure carved meticulously out of stone, we are transported back thousands of years to witness an era rich with cultural significance and royal grandeur. The intricate details captured by Bridgeman Images highlight not only the skillful craftsmanship but also evoke a sense of awe towards our ancient past.
