EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of horological artistry from the 18th century. The Louis XVI month-going mean and solar time mantel regulator with remontoire, created by clockmaker Robert Robin and enameller Joseph Coteau in Paris, is a true testament to their exceptional craftsmanship. The exquisite ormolu case features intricate details such as acanthus leaf and laurel leaf motifs, while the glazed panels allow for a glimpse into the inner workings of this magnificent timepiece. The white enamel dial is adorned with gilt-framed roundels depicting zodiac signs and floral garlands, adding an elegant touch to its design. Signed by both Robin and Coteau, it bears the date 1778 as a testament to its historical significance. The movement of this regulator is equally impressive, with twin interconnecting going barrels driving a weight-driven one-minute remontoire system. A Graham-type dead beat escapement ensures precise timekeeping, while an enchanting nine-rod gridiron pendulum adds visual appeal. Notably, the pendulum bob is inset with an enamel plaque painted after Boucher's famous artwork depicting a young lady on a swing. Measuring approximately 41x22.5x17.5 cm, this extraordinary mantel regulator stands tall as a masterpiece of mechanical ingenuity and artistic expression from the French Enlightenment period. It serves as a reminder of the incredible skill possessed by these master craftsmen who dedicated themselves to creating objects that were not only functional but also aesthetically breathtaking.
