Call to Hell, detail showing the Antehell, taken from Dantes description, 1500-02 (fresco)

6262769 Call to Hell, detail showing the Antehell, taken from Dantes description, 1500-02 (fresco) by Signorelli, Luca (c.1450-1523); Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta), Orvieto, Umbria, Italy; (add.info.: The interior, Chapel Nova or St. Brizio Chapel, southern wall
A group of slothers has a demon bearing a white banner, while in the centre you can see Charon ready to ferry the damned, destined, lower down, to the judgment of Minos. The latter is portrayed when he commits punishment to a damned man by a demons hair, wrapping his tail around his body as many times as the number of the group he is destined for. Further on, on the " proscenium", a devil with blue flesh makes to hit a damned man by holding his hair: the crudeness of the scene interested Michelangelo, who in fact copied it.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing detail from Luca Signorelli's fresco "Call to Hell" in the Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta), Orvieto, Italy. The image showcases the Antehell, as described by Dante in his famous work. In this scene, a group of slothful souls are depicted seeking refuge behind a demon bearing a white banner. Meanwhile, at the center of the composition stands Charon, ready to ferry the damned towards their ultimate judgment by Minos. The intensity and brutality of this artwork is evident in Signorelli's portrayal of Minos punishing one of the damned with demonic hair wrapped around his body multiple times corresponding to his destined group. Further along on the "proscenium" another devil with blue flesh prepares to strike a condemned soul by gripping onto their hair. This raw depiction fascinated even Michelangelo himself, who was inspired enough to replicate it. The Basilica Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta (or Duomo) provides an awe-inspiring backdrop for these powerful frescoes that depict various aspects of hell and divine retribution according to Dante's vision. This particular detail offers viewers an insight into both Signorelli's artistic mastery and his ability to bring Dante's words vividly to life through paint. Ghigo Roli skillfully captures this momentous artwork through photography, allowing us all to appreciate its intricate details and profound symbolism from afar.
