The Fairy and the Sea Serpent (oil on canvas laid on panel)
2956912 The Fairy and the Sea Serpent (oil on canvas laid on panel) by Fitzgerald, John Anster (1832-1906); 19.05x27.94 cm; Private Collection; (add.info.: This strange subject is from the wilder shores of the great fairy painters imagination. The son of an Irish poet, Fitzgerald was obsessed by fairies, and unusually for a Victorian artist his subjects were more often his own whimsies than borrowed from Shakespeare or Milton, and were much darker than the sweet renderings of his contemporaries. His manner of painting fairies was evidently Boschian, but with an opiate-fuelled Celtic inventiveness distinctly his own. Involved with the London theatre, his paintings were theatrically staged and lit, and are at their most effective when painted sketchily as if in a dream.); Photo eThe Ms Gallery, London; English, out of copyright

The Fairy and the Sea Serpent
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that transports viewers to the wild and imaginative world of John Anster Fitzgerald, an unconventional Victorian artist. This small oil painting on canvas laid on panel measures 19.05x27.94 cm and belongs to a private collection. Fitzgerald's fascination with fairies shines through in this peculiar artwork, which showcases his unique interpretation of these mythical creatures. Unlike his contemporaries who depicted fairies in a sweet manner borrowed from literature, Fitzgerald's fairy subjects are darker and more mysterious. His style draws inspiration from Boschian art but also incorporates Celtic elements fueled by opiate-induced creativity. The scene depicted in this print is both enchanting and eerie – a fairy swoons atop a sea serpent amidst stormy waves. The juxtaposition of good versus evil, supernatural against natural, creates an intriguing narrative within the frame. The macabre yet romanticist atmosphere adds another layer of intrigue to this surreal composition. Fitzgerald's involvement with London theatre is evident in his theatrical staging and lighting techniques employed in his paintings. To fully appreciate the dreamlike quality of his work, it is best viewed when painted sketchily as if emerging from one's own imagination. "The Fairy and the Sea Serpent" invites us into a realm where magic collides with reality, where monsters lurk beneath turbulent waters, and where beauty intertwines with darkness. It serves as a testament to Fitzgerald's ability to transport viewers into fantastical realms through his masterful brushwork.
