Wallet of Mirabilia Romae, Historia et Descriptio Urbis Romae by Pseudo-Aegidius Romanus, published by Andreas Freitag, Rome, not before 1485 and not after 1489 (leather)

472852 Wallet of Mirabilia Romae, Historia et Descriptio Urbis Romae by Pseudo-Aegidius Romanus, published by Andreas Freitag, Rome, not before 1485 and not after 1489 (leather) by Italian School, (15th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Copy of the earliest printed guide-book, a practical guide to pilgrim sites in the eternal city. Its wallet style is particularly evocative, being light, flexible and well suited to fit the pocket of a contemporary pilgrim.
Mirabilia Romae refers to two distinct texts, which have been subsumed under one title, owing to their transmission together in many manuscripts. The Mirabilia proper is on the wonders of Rome, and the Historia et Descriptio is, as its title indicates, a history and guide to the holy city. Although its ultimate aim was devotional in that it facilitated pilgrims worship in churches around the city, it contains much secular, even art historical, detail in its descriptions of more than 80 churches and the relics contained therein. ); Photo © Christies Images

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Wallet of Mirabilia Romae, Historia et Descriptio Urbis Romae" by Pseudo-Aegidius Romanus, published by Andreas Freitag in Rome between 1485 and 1489. Crafted from luxurious leather, this wallet is a remarkable artifact from the Italian School of the 15th century, now held in a private collection. The wallet's design is both practical and aesthetically pleasing. Its lightness, flexibility, and compact size make it ideal for contemporary pilgrims to carry in their pockets as they explore the eternal city. This particular piece is a copy of one of the earliest printed guide-books ever created—a valuable resource for pilgrims seeking guidance on visiting sacred sites within Rome. The "Mirabilia Romae" encompasses two distinct texts that have been combined under one title due to their frequent transmission together in various manuscripts. The first part focuses on marvels and wonders found throughout Rome, while the second part—titled "Historia et Descriptio"—provides a comprehensive history and guide to the holy city. While primarily serving as a devotional tool for pilgrims to worship at numerous churches around Rome, this guide-book also offers intriguing secular insights into art history. It meticulously describes over 80 churches along with their precious relics contained within. Preserved through time and captured beautifully in this photograph by Bridgeman Images (not affiliated with Christie's auction house), this wallet represents an invaluable piece of cultural heritage that continues to fascinate art enthusiasts worldwide.
