EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a page from the renowned book "La civilite puerile a laquelle avons adiouste la discipline et instruction des enfans. Aussi La doctrine et enseignemens du pere de famille A la jeunesse" by Desiderius Erasmus, printed in 1582. The delicate page measures 15.6x9.2 cm and is part of a private collection. The image captures the essence of the Northern Renaissance with its intricate details and elegant typography. The text, translated by Jean Louveau, offers valuable lessons on civility and moral conduct for young readers. Printed using the distinctive civilitetype B1 cut by Philippe Danfrie, this rare piece exemplifies the beauty of moveable type printing during that era. The grotesque figures surrounding the text add an element of whimsy to this otherwise educational work. The name "civilite" refers to both the content and style of printing used in this book, which was specifically designed for children's education. In fact, in his preface, Danfrie recommends his type to readers as it not only enhances their understanding but also serves as an ideal writing style for their language. This print allows us to appreciate not only the intellectual significance but also the visual artistry behind this important piece of humanist literature from sixteenth-century France. It is a testament to how books were once cherished objects that combined knowledge with aesthetic pleasure.
