EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Waldensian Sabbath" takes us back to the 19th century in Paris, where a facsimile copy of a manuscript was created. The image, beautifully rendered in color lithography by the French School, depicts an intriguing scene from Waldensian history. The Waldensians were a Christian movement that originated in Lyons during the late 12th century. Known as "The Poor Men of Lyons" they preached apostolic poverty as the path to spiritual perfection. However, their beliefs clashed with those of the Roman Catholic Church, which deemed them heretical. In this illustration, we witness Peter Waldo passionately preaching his message while surrounded by followers at what appears to be a secret gathering known as the Waldensian Sabbath. Illuminated by candlelight and adorned with intricate details, this artwork showcases elements that were considered idolatrous and demonic according to mainstream religious views at that time. Notably, amidst the mystical ambiance are flying witches on broomsticks and even a goat idol representing pagan influences intertwined with Christian symbolism. This representation highlights both the conflict between traditional religious practices and emerging Protestant ideals during the 16th century when some Waldensians embraced the Protestant Reformation. Preserved within Bibliotheque des Arts Decoratifs in Paris (and also held at Bibliotheque Nationale de France), this facsimile manuscript offers us a glimpse into an important chapter of religious history filled with controversy and transformation.
