EDITORS COMMENTS
Opening day: the orators, 1876 (albumen print) captures a historic moment in time during the 1876 Centennial Exhibition held in Philadelphia. This mesmerizing photograph, taken by an American photographer from the 19th century, showcases the grandeur of the event. The image depicts a bustling scene on opening day, with trolley cars lining up outside the Art Gallery and a diverse crowd of attendees eagerly awaiting the festivities under stormy skies. The umbrellas scattered throughout hint at inclement weather but fail to dampen the spirits of those present. As described by Looney's book 'Old Philadelphia in Early Photographs, ' this snapshot immortalizes President Grant alongside Emperor Pedro II and Empress Theresa of Brazil among other notable figures who graced this auspicious occasion. The terraces of the Art Gallery serve as a backdrop for speakers' stands while an impressive choir and orchestra occupy their positions opposite to create an atmosphere filled with anticipation. The neoclassical architecture of both buildings adds to their majestic presence against a gloomy sky. Streetcars traverse through busy traffic, capturing not only a historical moment but also showcasing urban life during that era. This albumen print is not just a photograph; it is a window into history, offering us glimpses into an extraordinary event that brought together art, culture, and international dignitaries. It serves as a testament to human achievement and reminds us of our collective ability to celebrate progress even amidst challenging circumstances.
