EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a detail of "The Last Judgement" by Hans Memling, an iconic Netherlandish painter from the 15th century. The original oil on panel triptych was commissioned by Angelo di Jacopo Tani, an agent of the powerful Medici family in Bruges. However, fate had other plans as it was captured at sea by Paul Beneke, a privateer from Danzig. In this particular section of the painting, we witness the dramatic scene of judgment unfolding before our eyes. The wicked are depicted falling into the fiery depths of Hell while devils eagerly await their arrival. Meanwhile, righteous figures bask in divine majesty and gaze upon Christ's judgment with awe and reverence. The composition is richly detailed and filled with symbolism. A vibrant rainbow arches across the sky above an orb held by Christ himself, representing his authority over all creation. Sinners tremble as they face their condemnation while angels observe from above. Displayed proudly in Muzeum Narodowe in Gdansk, Poland, this masterpiece continues to captivate viewers with its masterful technique and profound subject matter. As we contemplate this image captured by Bridgeman Images' lens, we are reminded of humanity's eternal struggle between good and evil and the consequences that await us all in the afterlife.
