EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the profile of Cour-rou-bari-gal, an Australian Aborigine from New Holland (now Australia), dating back to 1812. The image, a colour lithograph created by the French School in the 19th century, is part of a private collection. Labelled Nouvelle-Hollande or New Holland, this early name for Australia originated during Dutch exploration of the continent. The illustration comes from naturalist Francois Peron's Voyage de decouvertes aux Terres Australes, which documents the French cartographic survey expedition to Australia led by Thomas Nicolas Baudin between 1800 and 1804. Peron himself was one of the scientific team members on this voyage. The portrait depicts Cour-rou-bari-gal with striking scarifications adorning his face and body. His headdress adds an element of cultural significance and uniqueness to his appearance. This ethnographic representation provides valuable insight into the anthropological aspects of Aboriginal culture at that time. Published in Paris in 1815 as part of Peron's account, this engraving by B Roger after N Petit serves as a historical record of European exploration and documentation in Australia during that period. The Stapleton Collection holds this remarkable piece, shedding light on Australasia's indigenous people while showcasing their rich heritage through illustrations like these.
