EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable relief carving of an Empress, dating back to around 500 AD. Created by the Byzantine School in the 6th century, this ivory masterpiece is currently housed in the Museo Nazionale del Bargello in Florence, Italy. The Empress depicted here exudes strength and authority as she holds a sceptre in her hand. Adorned with ornate jewellery and wearing an elaborate headdress, her power is undeniable. Standing on a pedestal within a niche adorned with curtains, she commands attention and respect. Believed to be Ariadone or Ariadna, daughter of Emperor Leon I, this portrait captures her regal essence perfectly. The intricate details of her attire - from the parted headdress to the flowing toga - showcase the craftsmanship and skill of its creator. In one hand rests an orb symbolizing her dominion over vast territories. This relief carving not only serves as a testament to female empowerment but also highlights the influence women held during early Italian history. Preserved through time and now available for all to appreciate thanks to photographer Raffaello Bencini's lens capturing its beauty, this print allows us to marvel at both artistry and historical significance intertwined into one magnificent piece.
