2956792 Kroonstad, during the Boer War, 1917 (oil on board) by Howard, George, 9th Earl of Carlisle (1843-1911); Private Collection; (add.info.: Done on a small board on the spot, the snaking Valsrivier is a slick, wet stroke of white, playing against the frothy yellow freesia in the foreground. Kroonstad was the site of a refugee camp during the second Boer War, a conflict the Howards publicly opposed. Howard studied in London under Giovanni Costa, the Italian landscape artist at the core of the Etruscan Movement, which embraced plein air painting.
